Shed Fat, Gain Energy: Pacific Natural Thinks Outside the Alternative Fuel Paradigm with ‘FatBox’

New ‘FatBox’ Device Produces Biodiesel from Solid Animal Fats

LOS ANGELES, Nov. 13, 2007 -- In today's health-conscious society, the words "fat" and "energy" are rarely used in the same sentence. In today’s energy-conscious society, however, the words take on a whole new meaning. Pacific Natural Energy (PNE) has put a positive spin on fat, with the development of a revolutionary device that transforms fat into fuel.

The Los Angeles-based PNE (http://www.stopXon.com) has created the FatBox, a machine that turns animal fats into high-quality biodiesel. The announcement comes on the heels of PNE's introduction of its BioBox mobile processing plant that turns waste vegetable oil into biodiesel fuel.

"The FatBox is designed to work in conjunction with our BioBox," said Eric McLeod, PNE's founder and CEO. “Animal fats are a viable alternative to vegetable oil in the biodiesel production market.”

McLeod notes that the trend toward renewable diesel is more than just a passing fad. For example, Tyson Foods, Inc. and ConocoPhillips are in the process of setting up a 100 million-gallon-per-year plant that uses chicken fats. He adds that the project is a perfect fit for a company like Tyson, because animal fats are readily available in mass quantities from its chicken-processing plants

The use of FatBox is both economically and ecologically efficient because renewable diesel:

-- produces lower life-cycle carbon emissions;
-- decreases U.S. dependency on foreign energy suppliers by producing a domestic and renewable energy source;
-- creates approximately 95 percent less hazardous waste than petroleum diesel production.

So how does FatBox actually work? Raw animal fats – known as feedstocks – are loaded into the FatBox, which then liquefies them to be used in biodiesel production. It takes approximately 15 pounds of animal fats to yield 1 gallon of usable feedstock.
